Why Live Here?
Residents say they love living here because White Plains is a suburban community, but it also has awesome urban amenities. Situated just 25 miles north of New York City, White Plains has many neighborhoods and offers numerous parks and recreational facilities and programming, and then it has its downtown business hub that has attracted major corporations, colleges, universities, and high tech firms. Considered to be home to Westchester’s largest concentration of retail activity with three major malls and a revitalizing downtown, White Plains offers extensive shopping choice and plentiful and diverse restaurant options. It is also the Westchester County Seat, so there are many government buildings, offices and workers in the downtown area.
The schools are highly regarded, providing excellent educational opportunities for students Pre-K through 12th grade. The Pre-K program is free and is run by the Family Education Center in conjunction with the school district. Attendance in the elementary schools is not by neighborhood but by a nationally recognized Controlled Parent Choice Program; parents may tour all the schools and put in a request for what school they would like their children to attend. Two of the elementary schools offer bi-lingual, Spanish/English instruction. Sixth grade is taught at one campus; seventh and eighth at another. All White Plains students then attend one high school. Foreign language instruction in French, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin Chinese begins in middle school, with Accelerated German also offered at the high school, and a wide range of performing arts opportunities, from music to theater begins in fourth grade or middle school. The instructional technology program is considered state-of-the-art.
It has been said that “All roads lead to White Plains.” The gateway to both metropolitan and upstate New York, New England and other northeast markets, White Plains is a transportation hub. The Metro-North railroad transports residents to Manhattan, about a 35 minute express ride, and the Bus Trans Center is the hub for the County Bee-Line Bus System. The city is easily accessible to all major highways and parkways, and is strategically located less than a one-hour drive from four major metropolitan airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, and Westchester County Airport). Recent additions of dedicated bike lanes and electric vehicle charging stations and ZipCar rental sites add to the ease of traveling around the city.
Residents especially love their tree-lined neighborhoods, each with its own neighborhood association, with housing choices ranging from Tudors and Colonials to ranches, split-levels, contemporaries, Victorians, condos and townhouses, as well as co-ops. They also love all that there is to do in White Plains, from catching a movie at the multiplex to enjoying the pubs and restaurants that provide a nightlife after hours, to ice skating at the rink, playing golf at the municipal courses and mini golf at Saxon Woods Park where there is also an outdoor pool in the summer. There are lots of walking and hiking trails, and the Performing Arts Center offers Broadway theater and concerts. They also love that the Farmers’ Markets operates year-round, outdoors in the spring, summer and early fall, and indoors in the winter.
Why We Love It You don’t have to be Italian to love the Festa Italiana in July! There are amazing food booths, a dance floor, great music, and lots of games for adults and children. There’s even an indoor casino! I look forward to it every summer. ~ Tina
I think the best part of living here is that you can go home and be surrounded by lots of green and have a real sense of neighborhood, but in a blink you can be practicing at the driving range, taking in a show or shopping at a ton of different stores and feel like you are in a real city. ~ Gary
