Pelham

Why Live Here?
“Pedestrian-friendly” is a phrase often used to describe just one of the reasons Pelham residents love living here. Most students can walk to school, you can get off the train at the end of your commute and walk through the village and visit its shops and restaurants on your way home, and you can walk to the train station at the beginning of your commute. Pelham’s small town ambiance is another quality on the “love it here” list. A small village, right next to Pelham Manor with both in the Town of Pelham, it offers what residents say is a perfect mix of great houses, lots of cultural and outdoor activity and sports opportunities, and many helping-others civic and service organizations that have residents as volunteers, donors and active participants who care a lot about helping others and supporting their village. “This,” commented one resident, “is a great vibe. People really do care.”

Right in the middle of town is the renowned Pelham Art Center with its exhibitions, art and writing classes, workshops, theater programs, and special events. Emanating from the town are neighborhoods of diverse residences on manicured properties. There are shingle style Victorians, Tudors, clapboards, Queen Anne’s, Colonials, ranches, and Mediterranean’s, many built in the 1920s. There are also cooperative and condominium complexes. Many shops and restaurants downtown feature Tudor Revival structures, including arched doorways, slate roofs, and timbered-and-stucco exteriors.

The historic Metro North train station, right in town, sends off commuters on a short, 28-minute ride to Manhattan or to business-area destinations in other areas of Westchester County and Connecticut, and proximity to Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway make it easy to get to work for those who prefer to drive. As is the case in Pelham Manor, major airports are also close by, a convenience for those who travel farther than the train or highways can take them.

The schools are a point of pride within the community, with two elementary schools in Pelham and two in Pelham Manor, all feeding into one middle and one high school. Recently, the district began implementing the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme for sixth to 10th graders. Sports opportunities are many, not just for students but for all residents. At the southeast corner of a bay that connects directly to Long Island Sound, Pelham provides access to water sports, particularly active, competitive rowing teams for residents. The crew team is a varsity sport at the high school. Pelham is also a big hockey town, and the Recreation Department’s soccer program enrolled over 1,000 children recently. The Town also offers an endless array of recreation programs, ranging from chess and piano to field hockey, karate, lacrosse, rugby, tennis, and theater arts and ballroom dancing. Pelham is part of the Westchester County Park system, so residents can enjoy its golf courses, swimming pools, 5 beaches, and many parks and tennis courts.

Why We Love It!
The movie theater is awesome! It’s the last single screen theater in the entire county and it’s not only on the historical landmark list, but it also couldn’t be more modern and it shows classics, and independent and foreign films along with currently running movies. Great place to see a movie! ~ Maribel

We were thinking Italian for dinner and tried Sergio’s right on Fifth Avenue. Pretty place, great service and totally delicious food. There are a lot of nice choices along the Avenue but this one was perfect for us and it turns out it is a village favorite. I can see why! ~ Anthony
